Microsoft Eliminates Server Fans

Not all steps that improve the energy efficiency of your data center will boost performance in key metrics for measuring “green” data centers. An example: removing fans from servers, which actually has an adverse effect on Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE), the leading metric for data center efficiency.

Power saving memory

Computer memory heralds green PCs. 
A new form of computing memory which could lead to faster starting, user-friendly computers has been developed by US researchers.
The device, developed by a team at North Carolina State University, claims to combine the advantages of two commons forms of memory used today.
The “unified” memory device, outlined in the journal IEEE Computer, is still undergoing testing.
But the team believe it could form the basis of PCs that start immediately.

Lloyds TSB backs £200m Scottish data centre plan

Banking giant has confirmed its interest in a 250-acre site in Dumfrieshire, currently pending planning permission
Lloyds TSB has confirmed its interest in a planned £200 million data centre development project in rural Scotland.
In December, it emerged that the UK bank was considering two new data centre locations, one in Darlington in the North of England and one in Ecclefechan, Dumfrieshire.
Today, the BBC reported that Lloyds has “indicated its intention” to make a formal planning application for the 250-acre Scottish site and has announced two public information meetings with local residents. …

Digital Realty 2010 Leasing up 160% Over ’09

Wholesale real estate provider Digital Realty Trust (DLR) says it leased a record 1.2 million square feet of space in 2010, exceeding the levels seen prior to the financial crisis in the fall of 2008. That performance marks a 160 percent improvement on its 2009 total of 472,000 square feet, and also tops the company’s previous best single-year leasing of 1.1 million square feet in 2008.
