Cisco unveils containerised data centre

Cisco has become the latest major IT vendor to launch a containerized data center product. The networking giant’s new containerized data center comes in a standard 40-ft container housing 16 standard equipment racks, with capacity to support up to 25kW per rack.
Keith Siracuse, a product marketing engineer at Cisco, said that while the company is going to push customers hard to fill the containers with Cisco gear, the container is capable for supporting competing vendors’ products. “If a customer requires a certain thing in there, we’re going to work with …

Facebook shares green data centre technology

Facebook has announced that it will share the design secrets behind its new energy-efficient data centre with rival companies.
The social network’s facility in Prineville, Oregon is said to use 38% less power than existing centres.
It hopes, by making the innovations public, to cut the amount of electricity the industry consumes.
Despite Facebook’s advances, some environmental groups have criticised the firm over its green credentials.
Working under the title Open Compute Project, Facebook will release specifications and mechanical drawings of the building and its servers.
“It’s time to stop treating data centres like Fight …

Datacentres will need high-density power distribution within five years

Datacentres will need to incorporate high-density power distribution within the next five years.
Analyst Gartner has predicted that by 2015, 50% of datacentres will have a high-density zone, up from fewer than 10% in 2010.
Even datacentres built within the past five years are designed to have a uniform energy distribution of around 2kW to 4kW per rack. With the increasing use of high-density blade systems, This design envelope is no longer sufficient, according to Gartner. It recommends datacentre managers plan for 10kW high-density blade systems.
“High-density zones are by far the best …

Santa Clara’s cheap electricity attracts computer data centers with large carbon footprints

It’s a quiet morning in Santa Clara, but at the campus of a data center owned by CoreSite Realty, activity is humming. An enormous crane slowly moves steel beams behind a worker who explains that he and his team are working on a new, larger data center facility to replace the older, existing one.
A data center houses computer systems and Internet servers. Centers sell server services to anyone who needs a “host” for a website. CoreSite reported on its website that the expansion of its current data center would more …

Redundancy – The Key to Quality Colocation

Colocation facilities allow businesses to outsource their network infrastructure by housing network equipment externally. If those colocation facilities are inadequate, your business suffers from downtime, damaged hardware, and lost business. The hallmarks of a quality colocation facility are capacity and redundancy for every major system.
n+1 and the Difference between Capacity and Redundancy
Despite how common colocation facilities are, there are no industry standards, regulations, or rankings available for colocation facilities. The only way to identify a good data center or to recognize the quality of services is to determine for yourself …

Microsoft Eliminates Server Fans

Not all steps that improve the energy efficiency of your data center will boost performance in key metrics for measuring “green” data centers. An example: removing fans from servers, which actually has an adverse effect on Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE), the leading metric for data center efficiency.

This dilemma was discussed in a new video from Microsoft featuring Dr. Dileep Bhandarkar, Chief Architect for Microsoft Global Foundation Services, which designs and builds Microsoft’s data centers. Bharkander discusses how Microsoft realized it was duplicating effort by using fans in both servers and …
