Supermarket chain Tesco is investing £65m in a state-of-the-art datacentre as it gears up to expand its web operations outside the UK.
The retailer has signed a 15-year contract with datacentre operator Sentrum, to host the equipment that will power its fast-growing dot com and banking business.
The datacentre is the first stage in a five-year project by Tesco to rationalise its existing estate of 21 datacentres worldwide. Within three years, the move is expected to save the retailer millions of pounds per year in energy costs and management fees.

Equinix, the provider of network-neutral datacentres, is adding 4,000 square metres of datacentre space with an additional capacity for 1,400 cabinets at its London Slough LD5 International Business Exchange (IBX) datacentre.
Equinix will also add 130 dedicated business continuity trading desks to offer financial services companies emergency-trading capabilities.
The business continuity trading room (BCTR) will provide financial services customers with trading and trade-support capabilities with backup and recovery facilities to secure mission-critical trading operations. Google’s new €75m Dublin datacentre facility, which houses computers that provide critical cloud-based services such as the Google search engine, Gmail and Google Maps, is now operational.
The datacentre, at Profile Park in Clondalkin, Dublin – which took almost a year to build – uses an advanced air-cooling system and takes advantage of Ireland’s naturally cool climate. According to Google, this enables it to reduce power requirements significantly.
Using natural or free-air cooling means the facility does not require costly and power-hungry air-conditioning units, which are still used in many traditional datacentres.
